Fall Home Maintenance Tasks You Can Complete In A Weekend

Your fall home maintenance checklist.

1.  Aerate and seed your lawn.

Aeration loosens the soil and allows water, air, and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots, creating a healthier lawn. This is also the perfect time to over-seed, so new roots can take hold and produce a thicker lawn come spring.

2.  Stain the deck.

Increased foot traffic and the sun’s harsh UV rays put your deck through more wear and tear in the summer. Fall’s mild temperatures make it the ideal time to re-stain the deck so it can last longer and look its best year-round.

3.  Clean gutters and downspouts.

Clogged gutters can cause water damage to your roof, siding, and foundation. If you notice your gutters are sagging or not draining properly after cleaning, they may need re- leveled, or it could be time for new ones.

4.  Inspect your roof.

Look for any curling shingles or loose flashing, and be sure to schedule or complete necessary repairs before cooler weather arrives.

5.  Replace filters.

Your air filter should be replaced every 30 to 90 days, depending on your home and your HVAC system. Don’t forget to replace or clean other filters like the ones in your fridge, dishwasher, and range hood.

6.  Vacuum dryer vents.

Allowing lint to build up in your dryer vent not only makes the machine less efficient, it’s also a fire hazard. Use a vacuum to clean out the duct on the back of the dryer, as well as the vent that leads to the outside of your home.

7.  Check safety devices.

Swap out batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and test them to ensure they’re working correctly. For good measure, check your fire extinguisher’s expiration date and replace it if needed.
